Kristine Mugge
“Writing is like molding clay,” Kris tells her students, encouraging them to try an angle and then rework it if it doesn’t communicate the idea. Kris started her career in social work and gerontology and followed a rather circuitous route to writing and teaching writing. In high school, Kris worked with the elderly and then pursued a degree in gerontology at Miami University; however, she also followed her love of literature and majored in that as well. Needing money for college bills, she began working as a peer tutor in the writing center on campus, an experience that foreshadowed Kris’ future. Later, she completed a master’s degree in secondary education with a concentration in composition. Kris desires to help others discover the joy of writing, reading, and learning. After beginning in social work and gerontology, Kris now feels her best inclinations lie in teaching writing, sharing ideas, and encouraging students. When not teaching or preparing for classes, she enjoys reading, cooking, gardening, and traveling.

Nancy O'Brien
Nancy O’Brien has always been in love with the written word. She spent her childhood either with her nose buried in the pages of a book or engrossed in writing poems and stories of her own. After graduating from college Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. in English and a secondary English teaching certificate, Nancy taught 8th, 10th, and 12th grade English in Virginia. The journalism bug finally caught up with her, and she left teaching to become the news editor of a national trade magazine. She met her husband Greg while playing tennis at the local YMCA, and today they have four terrific kids between the ages of 5 and 15. While pregnant with their first child, Nancy developed and taught a technical writing course for the scientists at her husband’s company. She also edits transcripts for court reporters and teaches English to non-native speakers in her community. However, she still derives the most satisfaction from teaching young people to be competent, self-confident writers.
