All our coaches have at least undergraduate degrees*, typically in English, Creative Writing, Journalism or Education. Many have advanced degrees and all are experienced educators. But there’s more to an Accelawriter writing coach than a musty diploma. Here’s how we go about forming our amazing team of writing coaches:

1. We don't recruit coaches because our coaches approach us. Most have found us through other writing coaches and happy customers, making our team a tight network of talented writing coaches unified by the same goal.
    
2. We send them our long and mentally-taxing application, which includes several questions that require them to show us their writing skills. Poor writers don’t get considered.
    
3. If the application shows promise, we send them a batch of sample papers to mark up and evaluate. This is the most important part of the process. They need to show us what they can do for your students.
    
4. Those who demonstrate a solid grasp of good writing, who effectively communicate with student writers, and who demonstrate genuine care and concern for kids are brought on provisionally.
    
5. We call references. All coaches agree to a background check.
    
6. All contracted coaches go through Accelawriter’s proprietary training program before getting started.
    
7. All writing coaches are evaluated by a team of our very best, most experienced writing coaches throughout each school year. All coaches get coached. We think even great coaches can get better, so we provide each other feedback on an ongoing basis.

* Okay, we have one writing coach who doesn’t have a college degree. But she had a dozen articles and a non-fiction book published before she was 21 and really impressed us with her work on student papers, so we made an exception.
